Why Life Coaching Works

Whenever I want to make a change in my life I find someone to help me. I've worked with life coaches, therapists, personal trainers, business coaches, and spiritual teachers.

I need support when I'm making changes. As human beings we are programmed to stay safe where we know what to expect, even if it's somewhere we don't like to be. Personal growth requires us to open up to the unknown, and that's not comfortable.

So why does coaching work?

  1. Most people need accountability to make changes happen. In Gretchen Rubin's book, The Four Tendencies, she breaks down the 4 personality types she sees in the world. Her case studies show that a majority of us humans fit into the Obliger category, which means that we need some form of obligation to actually honor our commitments. It's easier to work out when you have a personal trainer or a gym buddy. It's easier to stick to a recovery plan when you're part of a community like AA. It's much easier to move your life out of neutral and into drive when you work with a coach who holds you accountable to your commitments to yourself!

  2. We just can't see the forest through the trees. It's hard to see when you're in the muck of it. We are naturally so invested in our own business, relationship, body, and feelings that we don't see them clearly. I can tell you from personal experience that when I was skinny I saw a fat girl in the mirror and now that I'm, well let's just say, not skinny, I see a skinny person! Our ego is so entrenched in our perception of ourself that it can be hard to discern what's real and what's fantasy.

  3. Having a guide to hold your hand IS the short cut. When I went to the Himalayas I wouldn't have been able to hike without a sherpa. Sure I could have taken out my google maps app, but there were spots without service and spots where the ground was too wet to hike from the rains of the recently departed monsoons. I couldn't have known those intimate details of the mountains. I needed someone to take my hand and lead the way, someone who had hiked that mountain before me.
